Beloved Northland Leader Te Ihi Adrian Tito Passes Away at 83, Leaving a Legacy of Cultural and Community Service

Whangārei, Northland — Te Ihi Adrian Tito, a cherished and influential figure in the Northland community, passed away on Friday, 23 August 2024, at the age of 83. He died at Whangārei Hospital, surrounded by his whānau, friends, and colleagues, marking the end of a remarkable era of service and cultural advocacy.

For the past 20 years, Te Ihi served as the Kaumātua and Chief of Tikanga at Whangārei Hospital, where his dedication to the well-being of his people was evident. His role was not just a job but a heartfelt commitment to integrating traditional Māori values into modern healthcare. Through his efforts, he provided a crucial link between the hospital and the local Hapū and Iwi, ensuring that cultural respect and understanding were always at the forefront of patient care.

Te Ihi’s impact went beyond the hospital walls. As Chair of the Kaunihera Kaumātua, Te Whatu Ora Northland, he was a staunch advocate for Te Aka Whai Ora, the Māori Health Authority. His voice was a guiding one on Tiriti (Treaty) matters, and he was a respected orator at significant national events in Waitangi and across Northland. His work often involved navigating complex cultural and governmental landscapes to benefit his community, highlighting his deep understanding of Tikanga Māori and his unwavering commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Te Ihi’s contributions were felt across the country, as he frequently represented Māori perspectives in discussions with other Iwi leaders and government officials. His leadership helped bridge cultural divides, fostering greater understanding and respect for Māori traditions and values within New Zealand’s healthcare system.

Following his passing, Te Ihi will lie in state at Tangiterōria Marae, Tirarau Te Whare Tūpuna, at 95 Pukehuia Road, Tangiterōria, Kaipara, Northland. His departure is a significant loss to the community, but his legacy of service, cultural advocacy, and leadership will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

Many individuals expressed their sorrow and paid tribute to Te Ihi on social media. Ange Pearson posted, "Beautiful man, RIL matua." Aniva Lawrence commented, "A huge loss – matua was always a guiding voice of wisdom for Te Tai Tokerau Te Whatu Ora." Ange Yendell shared, "Rest in love Matua Tito. I will miss seeing your face and feeling your calm vibe around the hospital."

Pauline Rose reflected on her time working with him, saying, "So sorry to hear this. I enjoyed working with him immensely during my time at Council. A very inspirational leader." Frances West echoed the sentiments of many, writing, "Farewell Matua, you were an extraordinary man, I loved your beautiful way of being. I am so sad that I’ll never get to see you again. Rest easy."

As Northland mourns the loss of a beloved leader, the community is reminded of Te Ihi’s enduring impact and the values he championed. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched and the cultural foundations he helped strengthen.
