Providence, Rhode Island – Catherine Oliver, a cherished figure in the Rhode Island craft community and a devoted mother, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the age of 75. She spent her final moments at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. Catherine was the beloved wife of Edward R. Oliver and leaves behind a legacy filled with love, creativity, and a deep commitment to her family.
Born in Providence to Donald and Flora Marchand, Catherine faced the profound loss of her parents at a young age. Despite these early challenges, she dedicated herself to raising her children as a stay-at-home mother, providing unwavering support and nurturing them through every stage of their lives.
Catherine’s passion for creativity was best showcased through her nearly 35-year venture, Woodland Woolies, a business she founded and managed with exceptional skill. Her artistic talents were recognized throughout New England, where she participated in numerous craft events. As a proud member of the Ocean State Artisans, Catherine’s work even caught the attention of Country Living magazine. The joy she felt seeing others appreciate and display her creations was immense, and she took great pride in her customers’ satisfaction.
Outside of her professional life, Catherine found immense joy in gardening. She spent countless hours tending to her garden during the spring and summer months, often sharing her harvest with friends and neighbors. Her love for gardening was evident in her frequent visits to local nurseries, with Four Town Farms in Barrington being a particular favorite. Her enthusiasm for garden projects often led her husband, Edward, to build new additions to their home, such as gates and walkways.
Summers held a special place in Catherine’s heart, as she loved spending time with her family on Cape Cod. The sunsets, beach days, and quaint village explorations created cherished memories that her family will hold dear.
Catherine also had a profound love for reading. She would often read novels in just a few days and then donate them to local libraries in East Providence and Riverside, ensuring others could enjoy them as much as she did. Her calm demeanor and practical advice made her a beloved confidante to many in her community.
Catherine is survived by her husband, Edward, and their children, Christopher Oliver and his wife Christina of Barrington, Nicole Dame of Warren, and Matthew Oliver and his wife Alison of Lincoln. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Ashley Dame, Christian Dame, and Hailey Oliver, as well as her brother David Marchand and sister Anne Crane. Her brother Steve Marchand predeceased her.
