David Bell Dies Heroically Attempting to Rescue Friends in Tragic Canyoneering Accident in the Sierra Nevadas

American Fork, Utah – The community is mourning the loss of David Bell, a beloved resident who tragically passed away last night during a canyoneering trip in the Sierra Nevadas. David, known for his kind heart and adventurous spirit, died while heroically attempting to rescue two friends who had become trapped in a whirlpool.

The incident occurred during the group’s final rappel. A friend, Jeannine, was caught in a whirlpool after landing in a pool of water. Another man, Peter, attempted to save her but was also trapped. Without hesitation, David jumped in to rescue them. Despite their best efforts, all three tragically drowned. Rescuers pulled their bodies from the water within seven minutes and administered CPR for over 20 minutes, but none could be revived.

David’s passing has left the community in shock. He is remembered as a friend, son, brother, uncle, and an incredible human being whose loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew him.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by Daniel Ostler has been set up to help David’s family cover unexpected expenses and funeral costs. The fundraiser has raised $50 so far, with contributions still coming in.

Laurie Garrett Fraser shared her condolences on Facebook, stating, "The Bell Family have tragically lost their son, David. Our family sends our condolences and love to his family."

Margie Alexander also expressed her sorrow, commenting, "So sorry for their loss always great young man."

David Bell’s selfless act in his final moments has touched many, reinforcing the deep respect and admiration his community holds for him. The pain of his loss is immense, and the community’s thoughts and prayers are with the Bell family during this difficult time.
