David Chester Stanaway of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Passes Away at 80 After Long Battle with Parkinson’s Disease

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – David Chester Stanaway, a beloved resident of Sault Ste. Marie and a well-known musician, singer, songwriter, and educator, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024, at the age of 80. His death followed a courageous six-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

David was born on December 16, 1943, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Chester and Louetta (Gabriel) Stanaway. From a young age, he developed a deep love for music, a passion he inherited from his mother. A self-taught musician, David became proficient in multiple instruments, including guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, and harmonica, and was renowned for his exceptional singing ability.

Throughout his life, David shared his musical talents with his community, often performing at local venues, weddings, and special events. His musical journey began during his college years with his first band, The Stingrays, and continued as he toured with Larry Slatter and the Executives. Despite his quiet nature, David found joy in performing, whether with his son Jeffrey or jamming with fellow musicians and family.

David was also a dedicated educator, teaching history, social studies, and geography at the Alternative High School and Sault Junior High. His commitment to his students was profound, and he was honored by Alternative High School graduates who chose him as their commencement speaker. He delivered his speech through a song he wrote for the occasion, titled “Tenacity,” which recognized the perseverance of the students and highlighted his ability to inspire those he taught.

David is survived by his son, Jeffrey Stanaway, his siblings, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and former students. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Louetta Stanaway.

The community has expressed their sorrow and shared heartfelt condolences on social media. Diane Keighley commented, “I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss. Deepest condolences.” Marci LaHuis shared, “Oh this breaks my heart, he was such a nice man. My condolences to you and your family.” Michael Johnston added, “Sorry to hear! RIP.”

David Chester Stanaway’s life was a harmonious blend of music, teaching, and quiet dedication. His presence will be deeply missed, but the melodies he created and the lessons he imparted will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
