Des Moines Community Mourns the Loss of Jim Carnahan, Celebrated Educator and Advocate for At-Risk Youth

Des Moines, Iowa – The community is mourning the loss of Jim Carnahan, a dedicated educator and counselor who made a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of at-risk students in the Des Moines metro area. Jim, who passed away recently, is remembered for his unwavering commitment to providing support and love to students who needed it most.

Jim Carnahan’s journey was marked by resilience and dedication. After being paralyzed in an auto accident shortly after his high school graduation, Jim went on to earn his degree from the University of Iowa, demonstrating incredible toughness and determination. He began his career as a Math teacher at Franklin Jr. High School before finding his true calling at South Alternative High School, later renamed Scavo High School. There, he served as a counselor, always pushing students to achieve their best, regardless of the challenges they faced.

Jim’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. He was known for his personal involvement in the lives of his students, often going out of his way to ensure they received the care and guidance they needed. His dedication continued even into his retirement, where he remained a beacon of support for former students and colleagues alike.

To honor Jim’s legacy, a fundraiser organized by Juley Murphy-Tiernan has been launched to create memorials in his name. The fundraiser aims to raise $5,000, with donations going towards park benches and a memorial orb at Waterworks Park, among other tributes. As of now, $175 has been raised from three donations.

Heather Hollingsworth Phillips expressed her sorrow on Facebook, writing, "Please help if you can. He was a great supporter for all students that could not be in regular high school, and he meant the world to me. THANK YOU."

Jim Carnahan’s legacy as a compassionate and dedicated educator will continue to inspire those who knew him. His contributions to the lives of so many students will not be forgotten, and the community is encouraged to support the efforts to honor his memory.
