Forth Children’s Theatre Mourns the Loss of Mike Grainger, Beloved "Magic Mike," and Backstage Legend

Edinburgh, Scotland – The Forth Children’s Theatre (FCT) and the broader Scouting community are mourning the loss of Mike Grainger, affectionately known as "Magic Mike," who passed away recently. Mike was a revered figure backstage at FCT, where he was known for his exceptional work ensuring that every microphone and prop was in perfect condition during performances.

Mike’s journey with the Edinburgh Gang Show began in the mid-1970s, after he attended a few shows at the King’s Theatre. His passion for the Scouting movement led him to become a Scout Leader in the Portobello District. By 1978, he was volunteering backstage with the Wardrobe Team for the Gang Show, a role that would define much of his life and legacy.

Mike’s dedication to the Scouts and FCT was unparalleled. He was a man of integrity, living by the Scout promise every day. His commitment to helping others and his positive attitude made him a beloved figure in both communities. Last year, he was honored with The Silver Wolf, the highest award in UK Scouting, recognizing his extraordinary service.

FCT members and friends have taken to Facebook to express their grief and share fond memories of Mike. Helena Kelly wrote, “It’s not often in life you come across someone like Mike, for even the short time we knew him he made such an impact on our lives! Rest in peace Magic Mike!” Bobby Duncan shared, “Mike was always the light of every production I did with FCT, the most supportive and the friendliest face – without mentioning the endless nonsense and laughing whilst mic’ing us up. Sending all my love to everyone at FCT and all of Mike’s friends and family.”

Niloo-Far Khan reflected on her time with Mike, saying, “I only did two shows with Magic Mike but he made them so memorable and was such a blast backstage. Completely and totally dedicated to helping anyone and everyone that needed it. When panic struck, he always smiled and somehow made us all giggle.”

Other tributes included Geraldine Deponio, who said, “Mike was an absolute joy to work alongside backstage. Always with a ready smile, genuine warmth, and that lovely twinkle in his eye. Rest in Peace, Magic Mike,” and Lindsay Wilson, who expressed, “I’m really sad to hear this. Mike was a wonderful man. Sending much love and thoughts to his family.”

Mike Grainger’s impact on the FCT and Scouting communities will not be forgotten. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and unwavering support will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Magic Mike; your memory will forever be cherished.
