Wrexham, UK – In a tragic incident that has left the community in mourning, Gail Lloyd, 50, drowned on December 9 while attempting to save her dog from a swollen river in Erddig Park, Wrexham. Gail’s husband, Martin Lloyd, who also tried to rescue her, was pulled to safety by passers-by but could not save his wife.
The couple had been walking their two dogs along the River Clywedog when their Fox-Red Labrador, Cadwy, became trapped below a weir. Gail entered the river in an effort to rescue the dog, despite her husband’s urgent pleas for her to exit the water. Martin Lloyd, who waded into the river to save her, was unable to reach Gail due to the strong current.
William Cossins, a participant in a Parkrun event at the park, along with other bystanders, responded to the emergency. They managed to rescue Martin, who had a rope tied to his wrist and was struggling against the current. However, the rescuers could not enter the river themselves due to the danger posed by the fast-moving water. Gail was eventually pulled from the water, but despite the efforts of a passer-by who administered CPR, she was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.
An inquest held in Ruthin revealed that the official cause of Gail’s death was drowning. Assistant Coroner Kate Robertson concluded that her death was accidental, highlighting the tragic circumstances in which Gail lost her life while trying to save her beloved pet.
The community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Gail Lloyd. The Samson Volunteer Fire Department shared their condolences on Facebook, urging people to keep Firefighter Tyler Bowers and his family in their thoughts and prayers after the passing of his grandfather, Charlie Franklin Reynolds, earlier that day.
The loss of Gail Lloyd is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks involved in even the most selfless acts. She is remembered by her loved ones and the community for her bravery and deep love for her family and pets.
