Elk Grove, California – Gregg Umipeg, a 55-year-old resident of Sacramento, tragically lost his life in a fatal car crash in Elk Grove on Monday night. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Laguna and Franklin Boulevards, where Umipeg’s vehicle was struck by a stolen car driven by a 13-year-old boy.
The Elk Grove Police Department reported that the stolen vehicle, a Toyota Sienna, had been spotted by officers near Grant Line Road and Highway 99. When the police attempted to stop the vehicle, the young driver fled, leading to a high-speed chase through the area. The pursuit ended in tragedy when the stolen car reentered Laguna Boulevard and collided with Umipeg’s Nissan Rogue as it was turning onto Franklin Boulevard. The impact of the crash caused the stolen vehicle to overturn.
Gregg Umipeg succumbed to his injuries following the collision. The young driver was apprehended and taken to a hospital for evaluation before being booked into juvenile hall. He now faces multiple charges, including felony evading police, which resulted in serious injury or death.
