Owerri, Nigeria – Christian Power Obi, the esteemed coach of Heartland FC Owerri, tragically passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024. The fatal incident occurred due to a road accident while the team was traveling from Owerri to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament.
The unfortunate event took place just after the team departed from Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, around 3:30 p.m. Traveling in a convoy of three vehicles, one of the team buses crashed into a parked truck while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Coach Obi, along with other injured team members, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo LGA of Imo State. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Coach Obi succumbed to his injuries.
Christian Power Obi was a beloved figure at Heartland FC, leading the team to an impressive unbeaten streak during the 2022-23 Nigeria National League season, which culminated in winning the NNL Super 8 in Asaba, Delta State. His sudden passing has left the club and its fans in deep mourning.
On social media, many expressed their grief and condolences. Chidiebube Okeoma wrote, "Heartland FC announces the passing of Coach Christian Obi," while ND Dlastborn commented, "What a sad news? Heartland FC has requested privacy for both the club and Coach Obi’s family during this difficult time. His remains have been transferred to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) morgue in Owerri, where the injured are also receiving further medical care.
