Jimmy Carl McVay of Iuka, Mississippi, Passes Away at 74, Leaving a Legacy of Community Involvement

Iuka, Mississippi—Jimmy Carl McVay, a beloved member of the Iuka community, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the age of 74. McVay, a man of many talents, had a long and diverse career that touched various fields, including healthcare, construction, and law enforcement.

Jimmy McVay was known for his hardworking nature and his ability to excel in a wide range of professions. Throughout his life, he worked as an ambulance driver, x-ray technician, and even contributed to the construction of important local infrastructure such as a waterway and a nuclear plant. In addition to these roles, he also spent time driving a school bus before concluding his career in law enforcement, where he served with distinction for both the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Iuka Police Department.

Outside of his professional life, McVay was deeply committed to his community. He actively coached and umpired little league, softball, and baseball teams, leaving a lasting impact on many young athletes. He was also a devoted fan of Ole Miss and the Atlanta Braves, sharing his love for sports with those around him. In his leisure time, McVay enjoyed watching Westerns and spending time outdoors, particularly while deer and rabbit hunting.

Jimmy McVay’s passing has left a void in the lives of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte McVay, his grandchildren, great-grandchild, and many other relatives and close friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Hayley McVay Franks, and his parents, Johnny and Gladys McVay.

The news of McVay’s passing has been met with an outpouring of support and condolences from the community. Numerous individuals have taken to Facebook to express their sorrow and share their memories of Jimmy. Rebecca Swanson posted, "PRAYING for all of the FAMILY," while Jean Wilkins shared, "Prayers sweet family." Others, like Tina Puckett, reminisced about the good times, saying, "So sorry to hear this, remembering all the fun times with him and Charlotte at TCN when they were dating. They were a sweet couple."

Visitation for Jimmy Carl McVay will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. The funeral service will follow immediately after, officiated by Rev. Dallas Culver and Jerry Long. McVay will be laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Jimmy’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or an organization supporting Autism, reflecting his compassionate spirit and dedication to helping others.
