Joseph DeLucia Commits Murder-Suicide Over Estate Dispute in Syosset, New York

Syosset, New York – Joseph DeLucia, Jr., a 59-year-old auto mechanic and former EMT, tragically ended the lives of three of his siblings and a niece before taking his own life on August 25, 2024. The incident unfolded at the DeLucia family home on Wyoming Court, where the family had gathered to discuss the estate of Joseph’s recently deceased mother, Theresa DeLucia.

The violent episode was triggered by a dispute over the deceased mother’s estate and the impending sale of her house. DeLucia, who had lived with his mother his entire life, feared being displaced and left with nowhere to go. According to Nassau County Police Detective Captain Stephen Fitzpatrick, DeLucia believed he was being excluded from the will, which escalated his distress.

Armed with a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun, DeLucia approached his family members in the rear area of the house and fired 12 shots, killing them instantly. The victims were identified as Joanne Kearns, 69, of Tampa, Florida; Frank DeLucia, 64, of Durham, North Carolina; Tina Hammond, 64, and Victoria Hammond, 30, both of East Patchogue, New York. After the attack, DeLucia stepped out onto the lawn, shouted about the incident, and then took his own life.

Neighbors reported hearing a scream and a gunshot before calling 911 around noon. Sandy Landsman, a neighbor, expressed shock over the incident, saying, “We heard a high-pitched scream, it was Joe screaming, then one shot. I was shocked. I never would have thought beforehand that this would happen.”

The tragic murder-suicide has left the Syosset community in mourning, with many reflecting on the importance of mental health awareness and support. Facebook comments from community members and observers expressed sadness and disbelief over the loss of life. Kimberly West commented, “This is so extremely sad!” Lisa Pisa added, “Seems people knew he was suicidal. I’m sure they never guessed he was also homicidal, very sad.”

Joseph DeLucia’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating effects that mental health issues and unresolved family disputes can have. As the community grieves, there is a call for greater compassion and support for those struggling with mental health challenges, particularly in times of significant life changes.
