Kevin Hickman, Influential Figure in New Zealand Thoroughbred Industry, Passes Away After Long Illness

Christchurch, New Zealand – The New Zealand thoroughbred industry is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures, Kevin Hickman, who passed away after a long illness. Hickman, who was the principal of Valachi Downs, made a significant impact on the industry over the past two decades. His contributions as a breeder, owner, and sponsor have left an indelible mark on both the racing and breeding communities in New Zealand and beyond.

Born in Westport and later moving to Christchurch, Kevin Hickman was a latecomer to the racing world. However, his passion and dedication quickly established him as a major player in the industry. After retiring as the managing director of Ryman Healthcare in 2006, Hickman turned his attention to thoroughbreds, where his influence grew rapidly. His cherished stud, Valachi Downs, became a renowned thoroughbred nursery under his guidance, producing numerous Group One winners and top-tier racehorses.

Kevin Hickman’s legacy includes the homebred O’Reilly mare, Silent Achiever, who won nearly $3.6 million in stakes during her career. His contributions to the industry extended beyond his own horses, as he played a crucial role in bringing European bloodlines to New Zealand, enhancing the quality of the local breeding stock.

The news of Hickman’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes on social media, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered throughout his life.

Jenny Kain wrote, "Kevin Hickman, we salute you and your family for all you have done for NZ racing. Sadly you have run your last race far too soon and will be very much missed right across the entire racing industry."

Karyn Outen commented, "To a man who was so passionate for his love of the horse, his dedication & generosity to the Racing industry is a huge loss. Rest easy Kevin, no doubt Silent Achiever was standing there awaiting you. R.I.P."

Jesse Martin, reflecting on his time working at Valachi Downs, shared, "So very sad to hear this. Kevin was a fantastic man with a great sense of humour. I had the pleasure of working at Valachi Downs. He was an amazing boss man. R.I.P Kevin."

Others, like Jack Jarvis, remembered Hickman’s personal connections: "Very sad to hear this news. Kevin was a wonderful man who had horses with my father in Newmarket, England. I was also lucky enough to work at Valachi Downs one summer during my university holidays. One of the best men I have had the pleasure of knowing…"

Hickman’s passing marks the end of an era in New Zealand racing. His contributions to the industry, both in terms of his professional achievements and personal generosity, will be remembered for years to come. As Canterbury Jockey Club CEO Tim Mills put it, "Kevin had a great passion for racing here at Riccarton Park, stemming from being a very proud Cantabrian. His unwavering support has elevated the stature of our races, and his memory will continue to overlook the course at Riccarton Park."

Kevin Hickman’s legacy will endure, not only in the horses he bred and the races he won but in the countless lives he touched through his work, his philanthropy, and his unwavering commitment to the industry he loved.
