Lexington Community Mourns the Loss of James Leonard Ely III and Kevin Scott Collins in Kyzer Road Tragedy

Lexington, South Carolina – The Lexington community is reeling from the tragic deaths of two residents, 17-year-old James Leonard Ely III and 63-year-old Kevin Scott Collins, in a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred on Kyzer Road on the night of August 20, 2024.

The incident happened at approximately 9:55 P.M. when Kevin Scott Collins was crossing Kyzer Road after checking his mailbox. He was struck by a motorcycle driven by James Leonard Ely III, who was traveling westbound. Both Collins and Ely were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe injuries they sustained in the collision. Ely, who was wearing a helmet, also had a passenger on the motorcycle, who was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the sudden loss of two lives.

Social media has been flooded with tributes and condolences from friends, family, and community members. Lee Merrill expressed on Facebook, "Rest in peace Beaufort. Kevin Collins. You gave your whole career serving citizens. You deserved better bro." Maggie Miles also shared her sorrow, stating, "Your neighbors care. Prayers for Collins and Ely families, and one who was injured. May God’s peace and comfort surround you."

Others echoed these sentiments, with Shanda Michelle writing, "Praying for both families, the young boy’s dad is a regular customer at my store. I can’t imagine." Johnny B Long Jr. added, "Praying for each family during this difficult time. Remember it’s not enough to look both ways anymore before crossing the road, be aware."

The deaths of Ely and Collins have left a profound impact on the community, with many sharing their grief and memories. Ginger Gary reflected on her experiences with Collins, saying, "Always enjoyed working with Kevin. Even on scene he had a smile for anyone who needed it, or a smart remark, lol. Rest now, Sir. You will be missed!"
