Maryland – Mary Lee (Benjamin) Woodruff, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Maryland on August 12, 2024, with her family by her side. Born on November 10, 1939, in Pittsfield, Illinois, Mary Lee was the oldest of four children born to Loren Fred Benjamin and Laura Jane (Doil) Benjamin.
Mary Lee spent her early years in Nebo, Illinois, before moving to Pittsfield, where she completed her high school education at Pittsfield High School. In September 1956, she married Robert “Bill” William Woodruff, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage and raised five children. Bill preceded her in death, but their enduring love continues to inspire those who knew them.
Known for her vibrant personality, unyielding spunk, and sharp sense of humor, Mary Lee remained lively and engaged even in her final days. She was an avid reader and enjoyed a good debate, never losing her curiosity or passion for learning. Her conversations, whether with friends or family, were always filled with insight and warmth.
Family was central to Mary Lee’s life. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, finding immense joy in their accomplishments. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering support made her a cherished matriarch, deeply loved by all.
Mary Lee is survived by her children, Malea (Woodruff) Templeton, Will Woodruff, Drew Woodruff, Sherri (Woodruff) German, and daughter-in-law Kelly Mulholland Woodruff. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her sisters, Bette (Benjamin) Garrison and Lois (Benjamin) Carter, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Michael Fred Benjamin, and her beloved son Eric Woodruff. While her passing leaves a void, comfort is found in knowing she is now reunited with those who preceded her in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Illinois, where Mary Lee spent many happy years before moving to Maryland. Details of the service will be announced at a later date.
