Matthew J. Bigness of Lowville, New York, Passes Away at Age 58, Surrounded by Family

Lowville, New York – Matthew J. Bigness, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the age of 58. He was surrounded by his loving family at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, New York.

Born on April 3, 1966, in Carthage, New York, Matthew’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country. The son of the late Clark and Doris Bigness, he graduated from Carthage High School in 1984 before answering the call to serve in the United States Army National Guard. His commitment to service extended throughout his life, most recently in his role as a respite care provider, where he provided essential care and support to those in need.

Matthew’s work ethic was also evident in his earlier years when he was employed by T.F. Wright’s in Carthage, where he set monuments, connecting deeply with the history and heritage of his community.

On July 14, 1990, Matthew married Jacey Lynn Gibeau at the First Baptist Church in Carthage. Together, they built a loving family, with Matthew being a proud father to his children: Anthony (Jessica) Bigness of West Carthage, David (Brandy) Bigness of Ellenburg Center, Kaitlin Bigness of West Carthage, Trinity Bigness and her companion Levi Petrie of Croghan, Elizabeth Bigness of Ellenburg Center, and Jack Elliott of Carthage. His devotion extended to his grandchildren, Ella and Sawyer Bigness, with a new grandchild, baby Matthew, expected soon.

Matthew found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly in spending time with his family. He cherished moments like watching movies, listening to music, and fishing with his son, memories that will be forever treasured by those he leaves behind.

A private graveside service will be held by his family in Fairview Cemetery in Carthage, NY, where he will be laid to rest. In honor of Matthew’s memory, the family has requested that donations be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, a cause close to his heart, at General Service Office, Post Office Box 2407, James A Farley Station, New York, NY 10116-2407.
