Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana – A tragic accident on U.S. 90 in Jefferson Davis Parish has resulted in the death of 49-year-old Shawn Maris, a resident of Mermentau. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, August 25, 2024, around 9:00 p.m., when Maris was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle near Triangle Shell Road.
According to the Louisiana State Police Troop D, Maris was cycling eastbound on U.S. 90 when he made a sudden left turn directly into the path of a 2013 GMC Sierra, which was also traveling eastbound. The driver of the truck was unable to avoid the collision, causing Maris to be thrown from his bicycle. Maris was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities noted several safety concerns that likely contributed to the fatal outcome. Maris was not wearing a helmet, and his bicycle lacked lights or reflectors, making him difficult to see in the dark. These missing safety features are crucial for visibility, especially during night rides.
