Michele D. Smith of Southington, Ohio Passes Away at 61 After Battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Southington, Ohio – Michele D. Smith, a longtime resident of Southington, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the age of 61. Michele died peacefully at Select Specialty Hospital in Youngstown, surrounded by her family and friends, following a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Michele was born on July 9, 1963, in Greenville, Pennsylvania, to the late Robert “Tom” and Judith White McDonald. She grew up in Mathews, Ohio, and graduated from Mathews High School. Michele was a beloved wife to Gary Smith, with whom she shared 37 years of marriage, and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Her professional life included over 25 years working at Judy’s Flower Basket in Fowler, Ohio, alongside her mother, where she created beautiful floral arrangements for special occasions. Michele was also a talented crafter who enjoyed scuba diving, square dancing, and camping.

Michele’s commitment to her community was evident in her service as an EMT with the Southington Volunteer Fire Department from 2002 until her retirement in 2018. She was also actively involved with the Southington Band Boosters and the Trumbull County Fair Board.

Following her passing, many expressed their condolences and fond memories of Michele on social media. The Southington Volunteer Fire Department honored her dedication, and numerous friends and acquaintances shared heartfelt messages:

A celebration of Michele’s life will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Visiting hours are scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and again one hour prior to the service. Michele will be laid to rest in Southington Graham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Southington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary or Life Banc in Michele’s memory. Her legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
