Nicholas Bates Identified as Victim in Fatal Colorado Springs Hit-and-Run; Community Mourns Loss as Suspect Arrested

Colorado Springs, Colorado – The Colorado Springs Police Department has identified the victim of a tragic hit-and-run accident that occurred at the intersection of Hancock Expressway and Jet Wing Drive as 31-year-old Nicholas Bates. The accident took place on the night of Sunday, August 4th, around 9:41 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Bates critically injured after being struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene, leaving Bates in a life-threatening condition. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries on August 6th.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on August 9th, confirming Nicholas Bates’ identity. On the same day, an arrest warrant was issued for 31-year-old Landis Bryant Jamal Hester, who is now facing multiple charges, including Accident Involving Death – Hit and Run, Motor Vehicle Theft, and other related offenses. Hester was apprehended on August 19th.

This incident marks the 35th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year, a sharp increase from the 27 fatalities recorded at the same time last year. The city has seen a total of 58 traffic-related deaths over the past year.

The death of Nicholas Bates has left a profound impact on the community. Many have taken to social media to express their grief and condolences.

Dee Romero wrote, "Prayers and condolences to his family. So sorry for your loss. May he rest in the arms of our Lord."

Penny Vancura Fields added, "Sorry for this loss. Such a terrible tragedy."

Jody Mccracken-piercy shared, "Prayers to his family and friends."

Another commenter, Bill Mohr, expressed frustration over the circumstances, stating, "Maybe now stolen cars can become a crime? Sad it cost this man his life."

Stephen Hood voiced his anger, saying, "Anyone that would drive away from somebody they’ve injured or killed doesn’t deserve life. It’s just that simple."

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Nicholas Bates, remembering him and praying for justice.
