Regis College Mourns the Loss of Beloved Educator Joan Murray, 84, of Norwood, Massachusetts

Norwood, MA – Joan Murray, PhD, a revered professor emeritus at Regis College, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the age of 84. Dr. Murray, known for her decades-long commitment to education and her deep sense of community, leaves behind a legacy that has profoundly impacted countless students and colleagues.

Dr. Joan Murray’s distinguished career at Regis College began in 1970, spanning 47 years until her retirement in 2017. She initially taught German and later became a pivotal figure in the Communication Department, founding the Communication Certificate Program in 1982. This program’s success led to the creation of the undergraduate Communication major, which she chaired from its inception until 2003, and again from 2013 to 2016. Her commitment to education was marked by her innovative teaching methods and dedication to her students.

Dr. Murray’s contributions to Regis College and her impact on students were evident in the heartfelt tributes shared by her former students and colleagues. Kathleen Schilling Lewis remarked, "She was truly exceptional. It was such a privilege to have been educated by her!" Nicole Marie reflected, "What a gem of an educator and human Dr. Murray was. Her feedback, honesty, and guidance were invaluable to my success and growth." Michelle Petersen shared, "God rest Dr. Murray, she was an incredible professor and one of the best Regis women. A true mentor."

Born on October 31, 1939, in Boston, Massachusetts, Joan Murray was a lifelong learner. She graduated from Regis College in 1961, pursued further studies at Tufts University, Indiana University, and Boston University, earning multiple advanced degrees. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom; she was also an active member of the Boylston Schul-Verein German Club, where she celebrated her German heritage.

Beyond her academic achievements, Joan Murray was known for her adventurous spirit. Alongside her late husband, Robert Farley, she traveled extensively, creating cherished memories across the globe. Her travels continued even after Robert’s passing, reflecting her enduring love for exploration and learning.

A funeral mass to honor Joan Murray’s life will be held on Monday, August 26, at St. Julia Parish in Weston, Massachusetts. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, particularly within the Regis College community, where her influence will be felt for generations to come.
