Hendersonville, Tennessee – The country music world is mourning the loss of legendary guitarist Pete Wade, who passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the age of 89. Wade, a revered figure in the Nashville music scene, was known for his exceptional skills on the guitar and his contributions to countless recordings.
Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, Pete Wade moved to Nashville at the age of 19, quickly establishing himself as a prominent guitarist. He worked extensively with Ray Price, who once called him “my favorite electric lead guitar.” Over the decades, Wade became known not just as a lead guitarist but also as a multi-instrumentalist, playing bass, steel guitar, and other instruments with equal proficiency.
One of Wade’s unique strengths was his ability to collaborate seamlessly with steel guitar players, a skill that earned him respect from both his fellow musicians and singers. His deep understanding of the steel guitar allowed him to create harmonious and memorable musical arrangements, making him a sought-after talent in the industry.
In addition to his illustrious career, Wade shared his life’s journey in his 2021 autobiography, My Life, My Guitar, My God’s Plan, co-written with Scot England.
Wade had recently been in hospice care in Hendersonville, Tennessee, where he spent his final days. His passing has elicited an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians on social media.
Redd Volkaert, reflecting on Wade’s influence, wrote, "As a young buck, I dreamed of someday owning a guitar just like that, so I could sound just like Pete Wade. It never happened, but that’s OK. I’ve enjoyed his guitar playing on so many Nashville recordings since I was a teenager, trying to steal his licks. What an incredible mark he left on so many guitar country players. RIP Sir."
Don Harmes, who had the privilege of working with Wade, commented, "Pete was a great guy and a great guitarist. I recorded 3 albums in Nashville for NLT Records in the 1990s, and Pete played lead guitar on all three of them. I was very honored to have Mr. Guitar."
Others, like Robert Shafer, recognized Wade’s legacy, stating, "Great player and I understand, a great guy. That Gibson was a gift from Grady Martin."
Pete Wade’s contributions to the world of country music will not be forgotten, as his influence continues to resonate through the countless recordings he graced with his talent.
