Ripley Resident Oscar Laron Shannon, Jr. Dies at 82; Community Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Banker

Ripley, Mississippi – Oscar Laron Shannon, Jr., a longtime resident of Ripley, Mississippi, passed away at his home on August 26, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on August 12, 1942, to Oscar and Bessie Nance Shannon, Laron was a distinguished figure in the community, known for his extensive career in banking and his dedication to local organizations.

Laron spent 40 years at The Peoples Bank, where he rose to the position of Senior Vice President/Cashier and served on the Board of Directors until his retirement in 2001. Even after retiring, Laron remained active on the board as long as his health allowed. He was deeply involved in several professional associations, including the Mississippi Bankers Association, and was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Club.

Beyond his professional life, Laron was a devoted member of the Ripley Presbyterian Church and a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, reflecting his lifelong commitment to community service.

Laron is survived by his daughter, Shea Scott, her husband Jason, and their sons, Robert and Ryan. He is also survived by two step-daughters, Lauren Freeman and Liz Bailey, along with their families, and his former wife, Linda Shannon. Laron was predeceased by his parents, his sister Anne Haralson, and his wife Rhonda Pannell Shannon.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ripley Presbyterian Church, with the funeral service taking place the following day at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Tippah Memorial Gardens.

Members of the community have shared their condolences on Facebook, with Charlotte Harling Adkins offering "prayers," and Karen Allred expressing "prayers for the family." These sentiments echo the deep respect and affection the community held for Laron.

Laron’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched in Ripley and beyond. His family extends their gratitude to his dedicated caregivers, Geanette Robinson and Tina Rogan, for their support during his final days.
