Sacramento Resident Craig William Ott Identified After 23 Years, Family Seeks Help for Proper Burial

Sacramento, California – After 23 years of uncertainty and heartache, the family of Craig William Ott finally has closure. Craig Ott, who disappeared in January 2001 under unknown circumstances, has been positively identified as the man known only as John Doe #3 (2001), whose body was discovered in Minor Slough on Ryer Island near Rio Vista.

On March 11, 2001, the Solano County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office responded to a call about a body found in the water. The deceased was initially unidentified, and despite a year-long investigation, he was ultimately laid to rest without a name. In July 2023, as part of the Doe Cold Case Project, the Solano County Coroner’s Office reopened the case, aiming to identify unidentified decedents using advancements in DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy.

Thanks to the efforts of the Solano County Coroner’s Office, Othram Inc., and the California Department of Justice, Craig William Ott’s identity was confirmed. His daughter, Sheila Ott, who had been searching for her father since his disappearance, expressed both relief and sorrow at finally knowing the truth.

Sheila Ott has since organized a fundraiser to help cover the costs of her father’s burial, as she seeks to give him the proper rest he deserves. Sheila shared her emotional journey, explaining how she had been contacted a few months ago about a potential match to a John Doe. Her worst fears were confirmed, but she is grateful to have found some answers after so many years.

The Solano County Sheriff’s Office has requested public assistance for any information related to the disappearance of Craig Ott. Those with information are urged to contact Detective Christopher Cavazos or Coroner Investigator Jessica Dew at the Solano County Sheriff’s Office.

In response to the news, many individuals took to social media to express their thoughts. Rosemary Norris-Southward commented, "Congrats to all who worked to give this man back his name and to give his family some answers and a measure of peace." Kimberly Fielding Korff added, "Thankful his family now has some closure. Horrible that some people are just not identified. Kudos to the investigation team for identifying him."

Others echoed these sentiments, praising the dedication of the investigative team. "It’s amazing they were able to identify him. Great job!" wrote Erica Edwards. Jack Hall simply stated, "Great work." Sharon Giannini expressed gratitude, saying, "Thank you for your work to bring closure for this family and a name to Mr. Ott."

As the community rallies around Sheila and her family during this time, her fundraiser continues in hopes of ensuring Craig Ott’s final resting place is one of peace and dignity.
