Steven McCrary Sr. Passes Away After Decade-Long Battle with Brain Cancer; Family Seeks Support for Funeral and Children’s Future

Detroit, Michigan – The community is mourning the loss of Steven McCrary Sr., who passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, after a courageous ten-year battle with brain cancer. Steven, known for his gentle nature and infectious smile, leaves behind five children and a grieving family that is now seeking support to cover his funeral expenses and help his children with their future needs.

Steven McCrary Sr. was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend who deeply touched the lives of those around him. Born to Pamela Morgan (McCrary) and the late Donald McCrary, he was a dedicated family man who faced his illness with resilience and a positive outlook, never complaining despite the severity of his symptoms. His love for his children—DaVeaun, Steven Jr., Alaya, Amya, and Aniyah—was evident in his determination to fight as long as possible to be there for them.

An avid football fan, Steven’s passion for the sport was reflected in his involvement with the Mackenzie High School team and the Detroit Ravens semi-pro football team. His legacy in football continues through his sons, Steven Jr., who plays at Wayne State University, and DaVeaun, who plays at Christian Community College.

The family has been left devastated by Steven’s passing and is now facing the financial burden of his funeral and cremation, which has been estimated at $5,000. Due to the terminal nature of his illness, obtaining life insurance was not feasible, leaving the family unprepared for these costs. In addition to covering the funeral expenses, the family is also seeking donations to support Steven’s children, ensuring they have the necessary resources as they continue their education and navigate life without their father.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Steven’s sister, Karrie McCrary-Houston, to raise the necessary funds. As of today, the campaign has raised $275 out of the $10,000 goal, with three donations from supporters, including $100 from Tashia Sellman, $75 from Jessica Myles, and $100 from Samantha Hughes.

Maureen Orr, one of the supporters, shared the campaign on Facebook, stating, "Hey there! I wanted to share a GoFundMe for Steven McCrary Sr., who recently passed away, leaving behind five children and a family that needs support. Every donation makes a real difference in covering his funeral costs and helping his kids with their future."

The family is asking for the community’s help to reach their goal by September 3, 2024, to ensure Steven receives the memorial he deserves and to secure the future of his children.

For those who wish to contribute, donations can be made through the GoFundMe page organized by Karrie McCrary-Houston. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference in honoring Steven’s memory and supporting his children during this difficult time.
