Los Angeles, California – Tom Girard, a former prominent Los Angeles attorney, has been convicted of embezzling millions of dollars in a Ponzi scheme that spanned over a decade. The 85-year-old lawyer was found guilty on four counts of fraud, having misappropriated at least $15 million from his clients, including victims of the 2018 Lion Air Flight JT 610 disaster.
Girard, who was known for his involvement in high-profile legal cases and his opulent lifestyle featured on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” siphoned off funds to finance a lavish way of living. His estranged wife, Erika Jayne, starred in the show, which showcased their extravagant lifestyle, including private jets and a sprawling Pasadena estate.
The fraud came to light through a federal investigation, revealing that Girard had embezzled funds meant for clients who had suffered severe injuries or lost loved ones. His firm, Girardi Keese, faced financial turmoil and bankruptcy by late 2020.
U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada condemned Girard’s actions, stating, “Tom Girard created a celebrity status and deceived victims by falsely portraying himself as a ‘champion of justice.’” Despite Girard’s claims of cognitive impairments, including dementia and late-onset Alzheimer’s, federal prosecutors argued that his actions were deliberate and calculated.
Girard now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 80 years, with sentencing scheduled for December 6. The case reflects a stark contrast between his public image and the severe impact on his clients, highlighting the consequences of his actions on both his victims and his once-revered career.
