Vernon L. Jewell of Elizabethtown, Indiana, Passes Away Peacefully at Age 85

Elizabethtown, Indiana – Vernon L. Jewell, a beloved resident of Elizabethtown, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on January 3, 1939, in Martin County, Indiana, Vernon was the son of the late Rev. Marvin and Ruth Carroll Jewell.

Vernon’s life was characterized by kindness, wisdom, and dedication to his community. He had a notable career in public service, having served as Bartholomew County Commissioner, Auditor, and Treasurer over the years. In addition to his public service, he was the former owner of Reed and Jewell Funeral Home and was currently involved with Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.

Vernon’s commitment to his faith was reflected in his active participation in the First Church of the Nazarene and Bethel Holiness Church. He was known for his warm personality and his love for fishing, particularly during family trips to Canada.

The news of Vernon’s passing has brought an outpouring of condolences and fond memories from friends and community members. Many took to Facebook to share their grief and honor his memory.

Vernon’s passing leaves behind his wife, Phyllis Jewell, his children, grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son Keith and daughter Mindie.

Funeral services for Vernon L. Jewell will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Columbus, Indiana. The family invites those who knew Vernon to join in celebrating his life and legacy.
