Wayne City, Illinois – The community is mourning the loss of Lowell Kerans, a well-respected figure in Wayne City, who passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday morning, August 20, 2024, at the age of 91. Lowell, who was born on December 20, 1932, in Ashmore Township, Illinois, was a cherished member of the Wayne City community, known for his deep involvement in local activities and his love for dancing.
Lowell Kerans was a proud Korean War veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from November 1952 until October 1956. His dedication to his country was paralleled by his commitment to his community. He played an active role in the Wayne City Saddle Club and was a regular participant in the Bean Day parades, an event he took great pride in. Even after the passing of his beloved wife, Carolyn Carrico Kerans, whom he married on November 13, 1958, Lowell continued to engage with the community, particularly through his passion for dancing to country music.
In addition to his community involvement, Lowell owned and operated Kerans Meter Testing, serving the REAs in Southern Illinois, and contributed significantly through his service on the Wayne City Board.
Following his passing, the community and friends took to social media to express their condolences and share memories of Lowell. Wayne City Little Opry posted a heartfelt message stating, "Sad news to report—Lowell Kerans, who helped me get started with the dance hall and was by my side every Saturday night as my dance partner, assistant, and best friend, passed away Tuesday morning. He wanted to get back to the dance hall for one more dance but it was not to be. Our dance this Saturday night will be dedicated to his memory."
Tributes from friends and community members quickly followed on Facebook:
- Brenda Cooper wrote, "Awww honey sad! He was a great dancer and we had fun doing some he knew and we didn’t!"
- Debbie Baker shared, "So very sorry, Debbie. Condolences to you and all family. May he sing and dance with the angels in heaven."
- Michele Anderson Stoffel commented, "So sorry to hear this but we know he wanted to go as his life he was living as of late was not what he wanted. He will be greatly missed. Praying for comfort for you and the family."
