Edison Fajardo—A young life was tragically cut short during a journey filled with hope. Edison Fajardo, a 19-year-old from Ecuador, passed away during his attempt to reach the United States in search of better job opportunities and safety. His journey ended in heartbreak the week of August 15th when he fell into a ditch trap, one of many reportedly set around the borders by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and drowned.
Edison had hoped to escape the gang wars and economic instability plaguing his homeland, seeking a brighter future in the U.S. Sadly, that dream was never realized. His passing has left his family in deep grief and facing financial burdens as they attempt to bring his body back to Ecuador for a proper burial.
A fundraiser organized by Selena Caizan, his cousin through marriage, has been set up to help cover the costs of repatriating Edison’s body and to alleviate the debt left behind by this tragic loss. So far, the fundraiser has garnered $30 out of a $5,000 goal, with contributions from two anonymous donors.
The loss of Edison Fajardo is a somber reminder of the dangerous paths many take in search of a better life. The family is seeking support to honor his memory by bringing him home for his final rest.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Edison’s family during this unimaginably difficult time.
