Emily F Duncan, Pittsburgh, TX—Community Remembers a Young Adventurer with a Memorial Scholarship

Emily F Duncan, a beloved member of the Pittsburgh, TX community, passed away on July 29, 2023, at the age of 21. Emily was known for her love of the outdoors, particularly her passion for backpacking and her cherished memories at Philmont Scout Ranch. Her adventurous spirit and resilience were evident from her early teenage years, as she embarked on challenging treks that tested her physical and mental limits. Despite her small stature and the demanding nature of the trails, Emily never gave up, showing strength and determination that inspired those around her.

Emily’s connection to Philmont Scout Ranch was profound. She participated in two 12-day treks that left a lasting impact on her life. On her first trek, at just under 14 years old, Emily was the only female in her crew. The journey was grueling, covering over 140 miles of tough terrain, yet Emily persevered with unwavering resolve. Her second trek was equally challenging, but this time she led an all-female crew, demonstrating her growth and leadership skills.

Emily’s life was tragically cut short after being diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer just 68 days before her passing. In honor of her memory and her love for Philmont, her family has initiated the Emily F. Duncan Memorial Scholarship. Curtis Duncan, who is organizing the fundraiser, aims to raise $25,000 to establish a named scholarship in Emily’s honor. As of now, $100 has been donated by Eliza Engle, marking the beginning of what the family hopes will be a lasting tribute to Emily’s legacy.

Emily’s family and friends are deeply mourning her loss, but they take comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to inspire others through this scholarship. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and in the lives of the young adventurers who will benefit from this scholarship.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Emily F Duncan. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
