Keoni Welson, Lahaina, HI Community Rallies Around Beloved Crew Member

Lahaina, HI—The community of Lahaina is reeling from the tragic news that Keoni Welson, a cherished member of the Expeditions passenger ferry crew to Lana’i, was involved in a devastating car accident recently. Known for his kindness and unwavering dedication, Keoni has always been a pillar of strength and support to those around him.

On his way home from work, Keoni’s vehicle hit a guardrail on the Honoapiilani Bypass. The accident was severe, leaving him with multiple traumatic injuries, including damaged ribs, injured ankles, and a shattered wrist. Keoni has been fighting through pain and uncertainty during a four-day stay at Maui Memorial Hospital, and now faces surgery on Oahu and a long road to recovery.

Rachel Nguyen, a fellow ferry crew member, expressed her deep concern on Facebook, describing Keoni as “the nicest and kindest person that would literally give the shirt off your back.” She and many others in the community are spreading the word and offering their support during this difficult time.

In the face of mounting medical bills and the financial strain of an extended recovery period, a GoFundMe campaign has been organized by Abigail Thornton to help Keoni. The fundraiser has already raised $850 out of a $25,000 goal, with donations pouring in from friends and community members alike, including John Dupuis, Rachel Nguyen, Maile Herolaga, Cindy Pestana, and Silas Carpenter.

Keoni’s life has been marked by his service to others, from his time as a military police officer in Pohnpei, Micronesia, to his role as a dedicated crew member on the ferry. Now, the community he has served so faithfully is coming together to support him in his time of need.

We extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to Keoni and his loved ones. May he find strength and comfort in the love and support of his community during his recovery.
